What to Expect at the Consulate

What to Bring to Your Consulate Appointment

When you visit the consulate for your citizenship appointment, you must bring the following:

  • Your U.S. passport
  • Your driver’s license
  • A current utility bill
(no more than 60 days old, listing your mailing address)
  • A money order for 600 euros or the
    U.S. dollar equivalent
(check exchange rates on the consulate’s website)

Important Consulate Policies

Italian consular officers have the right to deny an application if there are name or date discrepancies that require record amendments. Additionally, the consulate will keep the original U.S. and Italian documents submitted with your application. If you need copies for personal or family records, be sure to order duplicates in advance.

After Your Application is Approved

If your application is conditionally granted, you will receive an official letter once your vital records are successfully registered in your Italian ancestor’s town of birth. Passports are not issued on the same day as your citizenship approval. Once you receive written confirmation of citizenship, you may return to the consulate with proof of citizenship, two passport-size photos, and payment to obtain your Italian passport.

While Your Italian Passport guides you through this process, we do not contact the consulate for status updates or assist in scheduling passport appointments. Clients must make these inquiries directly using the instructions on the consulate’s website.
